Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor Construction – TS13 & TS14 Series Overview
Basic Structure of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, commonly referred to as e-caps, utilize etched pure aluminum foil as the anode (+).
The etched surface increases effective surface area, enabling higher capacitance per unit volume.
A thin aluminum oxide layer is formed on the anode foil and serves as the dielectric.
The electrolyte, which covers the oxide layer, functions as the cathode (-).
This structure allows aluminum electrolytic capacitors to achieve relatively high capacitance compared with ceramic and plastic film capacitors of similar size.
Electrical Characteristics
- Capacitance range: 0.1 ?F to 2,700,000 ?F (2.7 F)
- Rated voltage range: 4V to 630V
- High capacitance per unit volume compared to ceramic and film capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors with non-solid electrolyte are widely used due to cost efficiency and broad electrical range.
Self-Healing and Lifetime Considerations
The liquid electrolyte supplies oxygen to reform the dielectric oxide layer, enabling a self-healing mechanism.
However, electrolyte evaporation may occur through temperature-dependent drying-out processes.
This can cause parameter drift and limit service life.
Production Flow Overview
The general production process of aluminum electrolytic capacitors includes:
- Aluminum foil preparation and etching
- Oxide layer formation
- Electrolyte impregnation
- Winding and assembly
- Sealing and finishing
- Electrical testing and inspection
Applications
- Power supply filtering
- Energy storage in DC circuits
- Industrial control systems
- Consumer electronic equipment
Design Considerations
- Select voltage rating with sufficient design margin.
- Consider operating temperature impact on lifetime.
- Evaluate capacitance requirement based on ripple and filtering needs.
- Review datasheet parameters before design integration.
